Spit Wine and Spirit School creates a relaxed, straight
talking environment where you can learn about wine
and spirits in the comfort of the private
dining rooms at the Plough Harborne.


We offer level one and two WSET courses along with
tasting events, whisky nights and other short courses. 

Who is the WSET?

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) was founded in 1969
to provide high quality education and training in wines and spirits.
Since then, the WSET has grown into the foremost international
body in the field of wines and spirits education, with a suite
of sought-after qualifications.


This course is a good starting point for the exploration of wine styles.
No prior knowledge is required as the course is designed to introduce
wines in an interactive, structured and concise manner.
This course will suit a novice wine enthusiast or those wishing to start
their career in the wine or hospitality business.


The course covers the major grape varieties, regions of the world,
food and wine pairing, sparkling wines, fortified wines and the
major spirits. You will not need any formal qualification, just
an enthusiasm for the subject and willingness to learn.
This course is ideal for anyone wishing to be introduced to wine
or spirits in an informative and structured manner. It is suitable
for both the enthusiast and those looking to enter or already
working in the wine and hospitality business requiring a good
level of product knowledge.

This is a great opportunity to discover some great red wines from around the world. From France to Australia, Enjoy old world classics and new world discoveries.

28th February
Wine Punks ! A night of Natural Wines embracing anarchy in the vineyards

7pm – 9pm

We will be welcoming our friend Sam Olive from Wine Freedom to present a selection or natural wines from some of the most progressive wine producers from around the world. Open your mind and enjoy a different side of the wine world. Expect funky, fresh and fun.

21st March
One tequila, Two tequila, Three tequila, Floor. A master class in Tequila and Mescal

7pm – 9pm

Spit wine school will be welcoming back Tom Bartram, who will guide you through a tasting of some of his favorite mescals and tequila. He will share his wealth of knowledge and introduce you to the finer side of this often misinterpreted spirit.

28th March
Too cool for school. The love of cool climate varietals’ is possibly the most fanatical of all wine adoration.

7pm – 9pm

We will would guide you through a tasting of the verities that thrive in the cooler climates of the globe, think crisp Tasmanian chardonnay, earthy Oregon pinot noir and zippy Austrian Riesling.

3rd May
Everything You Wanted To Know About Orange Wine (But Were Afraid To Ask)

7pm – 9pm

We look forward to welcoming our good friend Sam Olive from Wine Freedom, who will be sharing his expertise on the fascinating subject of orange wines. You’ll get to taste a range of orange wines from around the wine making world, and for the record, orange wine is not made from oranges.

It’s that time of year again when you need to sharpen up your cocktail making skills for those garden parties and BBQ’’s. We’ll give you a master class in some classics, some tips on what wine to be drinking this summer and keep you entertained with plenty of drinks to try.

When in Rhone

With rich reds and full-bodied whites, over 30 appellations, iconic grape varieties and a rich history, the Rhone is often thought of as a sommeliers dream. We will share our love and knowledge of the area and taste some of the iconic wines as well as introduce you to some of the lesser know gems.

Lost in Translation

We are so excited to welcome back our good friend and whisky expert Stef Holt for an evening of Asian whisky,
Steff will be guiding you round the region and you’ll be tasting some superb whiskies from Japan, India and Taiwan.

22nd August
Rare Grapes

7pm – 9pm

With over 10,000 grape varieties used for vinification, lets put the Cab Sav and the ‘Chardy’ down and go on an adventure. We will be showing you some of the most obscure and interesting wines from all over the world, throwing out the rule book and challenging everything you think you know about the humble wine making grape.


26th September
Make America Grape Again

America gets a bit of bad press these days but let’s leave the politics to one side and concentrate the really important things in life, grapes. We have chosen some of our favourite wines from across the United States and we’ll guide you round the important, up and coming and lesser know wine hot spots from this amazing country.

Oktoberfest of wine

Don’t let Oktoberfest be all about the beer! This is Oktoberfest with a difference We’ll be sharing with you some of our favourite drops from germany, Austria and Switzerland, Yes Switzerland!!

Dummies guide to festive drinking

It’s our annual trip through the Christmas drinks cabinet. Get some tips on what you should be drinking this Christmas, find out the best buys at your local supermarket and learn the secrets of making a perfect Mulled wine.
